🌊 Exciting news from our classroom! 🌊
Thanks to the amazing work of conservation teams in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands on Kure Atoll, Mrs. Sneed's AP Environmental Science Class received albatross boluses — a special and unique teaching tool! A bolus is the natural, undigested material (like bits of squid beaks and plastics) that young albatross spit up before they leave the nest.
Students dissected their boluses to learn about ocean ecosystems, human impact, and plastic pollution. We will also be contributing our findings to a citizen science project that helps researchers better understand the marine environment!
Thank you to Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, the State of Hawai‘i, Kure Atoll Conservancy, and NOAA for making this opportunity possible.
Some of the items found in our boluses were: squid beaks, an ear bud, fishing lines, rope, plastic bags, Styrofoam, and several plastic pieces.
